Best Practices in Mentoring
What is mentoring? Mentoring pertains to the development of rapport involving a more knowledgeable mentor and a less knowledgeable protégé or mentee. A protégé or a mentee is a person who is guided, supported and protected from an experienced mentor. A mentor is the one who boosts the career of a protégé or a mentee.
What is best practice? Best practice is an organizational idea which states that there is a standard activity, process, method, technique, reward or incentive that is more effectual in accomplishing a specific result. The idea is that a desired result is delivered with few or no unexpected complications and/or problems. Best practices is also described as one of the most effective and efficient way in carrying out a task, based on tried and tested procedures.
Therefore, best practices in mentoring involve the development of an equally beneficial correlation that improves the proficient intelligence of the mentor and the protégé or the mentee. A good mentor usually projects expertness, candidness, affability, and communication skills. Enthusiastic protégés or mentees have a tendency to express desire for knowledge, utmost discipline and self-respect.
A Good Mentor
A good mentor is a mentor who (is):
• Listens well and treats the conversation with the mentee as confidential.
• Determines what is important to a mentee and explore their ambitions, propensities and skills.
• Knows the importance of the learning process by creating a candid and open relationship to promote confidence and trust.
• Accepts the fact that in some cases a mentee may need to seek other sources of assistance and help.
• Appropriately trained and has vast knowledge in mentoring.
• Should have a professional approach in mentor-mentee relationship.
• Refrain from mentoring those who are directly reporting to them, no matter how professional the relationship is, this will avoid other colleagues to think that the mentor may influence some matters pertaining to the issues concerning the mentee’s decision and position.
A Good Mentee
A good mentee is a mentee who (is):
• Very enthusiastic to be taught and trained and is liberated to new ideas or concepts.
• A team-player who can interact well with other people.
• A risk taker who is not afraid to go beyond the boundaries of safety and venture into uncertainties to learn.
• Patient enough to realize that an ambition in life cannot be acquired overnight.
• A positive attitude, even in the midst of a crisis.
• Demonstrates inventiveness and resourcefulness in any task assigned.
• Accepts feedback, negative or positive, about behavior and skills, with an intention to improve and learn from it.
When is a Mentor-Mentee Relationship Good?
A good mentor-mentee relationship is not just gauged by the personality of each that they bring into the relationship, more significantly, the occurrence of proper interaction and behavior is needed all throughout the process. What the mentor accomplishes with the mentee, and how eager the mentee responds and receives it, is what matters most in such a relationship.
A good mentor-mentee relationship cultivates and successfully carries out the following:
• Career Roles:
1. A mentor that introduces new opportunities to the mentee, which the latter believes in.
2. A mentor that coaches and sponsors a mentee, which the latter gratefully accepts.
3. A mentor that protects and challenges a mentee, which the latter understands as part of the relationship.
• Psychological Roles:
1. A mentor who is a role-model, which the mentee looks up to.
2. A mentor who counsels, which the mentee receives wholeheartedly.
3. A mentor who befriend a mentee, but is still focus enough to achieve the goals of the relationship.
4. A mentor and a mentee who accept and confirm each others ideas.
Within this representation, a mentor serves as a leader, a teacher that encourages thinking abilities, an advocate of realistic principles, an overseer, and an analyst. A mentee on the other hand is a student who is willing to be taught and is ready to embark on a journey towards an absolute learning experience.

You probably heard all the motivational pep talk before, but it is worth listening to, for motivational purpose if nothing else, because attitude really is crucial in this line of work. If you are going to be the Work at Home Entrepreneur, you need to be a work at home addict *well at least if you want to work from home*
If you are an employee or working for someone else, the first step in making that jump from a 9-5 job to an entrepreneur is to decide whether or not you have what it takes to follow this path.
Not all of us are cut out to be our own boss. What do you do when the boss is not watching you? When it comes to discipline, are you going to slap yourself around when you are not putting in the effort into your business?
Not only that, you really have to sit down and think about what makes you so special when it comes to the field you are going to enter. Since there are throngs of freelancers and Internet Marketing wannabes out there competing for the very jobs you are looking for. It seems these days that everyone is a budding Entrepreneur and want to work at home.
Do you have a large enough skill set to make you stand out amongst the hoards of different people all seeking the same work as you?
Do you have the time management skills necessary to run your own freelancing operation or outsource to the right people as well as struggling to meet all of the deadlines set upon you by your clients?
If you have even the slightest doubt in your mind about all the commitments versus the security of not having a regular (and predictable) salary, then maybe you might have to think twice whether Working at Home is suitable for you.
If you are still reading on at this point, good for you! Maybe this is for you J
When you start out as a Freelancer, Home Worker, TeleCommuter.. you will probably have to take a few jobs that do not pay very well at all. However, that is fine because these jobs help you to develop your experience and will build your credibility in your field.
Think of it as on the job training. You don’t become Michael Jordan overnight without being kicked off the court by others better than you.
You need to learn how to manage your time more effectively too! You have got to learn how to speed up your workflow and learn all about using a computer and the internet to search for answers to any questions that may pop up while you are doing work for your client.
The low paying jobs will probably last for a little while, until you have assembled a good list of satisfied clients, you can then ride on your reputation and get better paying jobs.
Eventually though you will graduate into higher and higher paying jobs until you will find that you have practically doubled your current income!
At this point you should feel confident enough to possibly start thinking about reducing the number of hours you work at your current job to part time status or even quit your job all together and make your fortunes solely through freelancing in your selected field.
Working at home can be tough, especially if you have a home office. Constant “noise” from the family and house comings and goings can be hard to work around, so try to zone off your own space that is considered your office and NOBODY disturbs you when you are in there.
At some point you may be ready or may simply want to jump to the world of leveraging incomes and being more of a project manager than the freelancer, but we will save that post for another day.
If you have the passion, the support, and the drive and enthusiasm to attain your goals, nobody else will stop you. FEEL IT! KNOW IT! OWN IT! WORK IT!
Know your end game, why you are going to go through this pain barrier when you shift focus from Employee to Entrepreneur and it will come to you.
If you have not heard of Income.com or John Reese yet.. you should! Punch his name into Google and you will see many links, stories, posts, achievements, and even the odd record setting online from Mr Reese.
One thing you can learn to do RIGHT away online is to study successful people. Of course this is true in anything in life you wish to be good at. Study those that are successful, look for traits that you can duplicate or build upon and look for the common ground in people that reflect the path you are on or would wish to be on.
Surrounding yourself with like minded people who are in your “desired” place in life as opposed to those who are in your current place in life and you will see a dramatic shift in your thinking, your work rate and even your enjoyment of life.
Seminars are a GREAT place to do this, but make sure you seek out those who are a little (or a lot) above your league right now and ‘listen and learn’ from what they say and do.
Of course you will be your own person, you dont want to be mini me
but you can advance yourself fast track style by mixing it up with those that are already doing what you would wish for.
John Reese is one of those people, so make sure you check out his site(s) and see what his is up to from time to time.
Have a great weekend..
